This was a sculpt I did in early 2007 for Sideshow Collectibles. I thought you Star Wars junkies would like to see the bare sculpt. You can see the finished prototype at Sideshow's site:

The diorama is just now starting to ship out, and I gotta say, I think they did an amazing job keeping it faithful to the painted prototype. (I only sculpted the piece, the paints were done by at by Sideshow's team)

The sculpt is in 1/9th scale and stands about 10" tall. Sculpted in NSP and wax. the lightsabers were given to me to place into the sculpture, but otherwise everything was done by hand (except the pipe on the ground, the chain, and the smaller rocks)

enjoy!

Is it reccommended to sculpt a figure in separate parts? I see you have little Yoda shown as just a torso in one of the clips. Do you sculpt everything separately for casting purposes, ease of sculpting/assembling, or a bit of both?

I've attempted full figure sculpts before, and having everything together as one piece is just too frustrating for words. I wonder if this method is easier to deal with.

Again, awesome work here!

Hi!
Yes, for this kind of work, I think it's very helpful to have the piece broken up while you're working on it. The main purpose for breaking up a statue is for molding, but it also aids in getting a clean detailed piece. There are some nooks and crannies you couldn't get into without arms being removable, or heads being able to pop off. :)

If you're working in sculpey, or something, you can do your best while it's a full figure, and after it's baked and hardened you can use a jeweler's saw to disassemble it for molding. You'll also he able to clean up any points you weren't able to get your tools into by sanding or whatnot.

I hope this helps! thanks!

You'd think Yoda would be pretty easy..at least in terms of likeness, but I've seen a lot of sculpts that aren't quite there. This is not one of those. This is as close to perfect as it gets.

Great work on the robes. The folds are very convincing and they have a really nice movement to them.
