XMEN Colossus by TrevorGrove XMEN Colossus by TrevorGrove
Xmen's Colossus. This was a small project I got to work on with my pals over at Sideshow Collectibles.

I was only hired to work on the portraits. The statue was sculpted exquisitely by Tony Cipriano.

Here's a link to the beautiful finished statue: [link]

Sculpted in 1:4 scale, so the heads are about the size of a baseball. Sculpted in wax. It was fun to try stylized portraiture, I don't get tasked to do that often.

Stunning! Your portraits and Tony's "base part" looking great together :#1:
Looks very comic stylish and real at the same time.

Unfortunately it's not about the SSC clothes which is totally doesn't accentuate the body relief and making to look as if it dressed in a some kind of... sweater. Not the best thing to go with mixed-media priced $400

Btw HELLO Trev!
I finally signed up here and ready to quietly reveal my art after settling some vital issues :jedi:

Exquisitely done, as always.

One question: why are there two different heads? I'm not familiar with figure making and collecting, so I'm basically a lay person when it comes to this stuff. Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks!!

Yeah, sometimes at Sideshow we do various versions so that collectors can switch out the heads to pick the look they prefer. These days it's all about versatility. :)
Thanks again,
Trev

Wow,yeah!I can only imagine how fun it was working on this,if not for a chance to do some stylized work.
Stunning Trev!
I hope this opens up more opportunity for you to do some other Marvel legends down the way.I would love to see your portrait sculpts of Scarlet Witch,and/or Vision.:)

It is cool to do stylized work! I'd love to try my hand at animated maquettes. Some of my favorite sculptors are the guys who do amazing cartoon statues and what not. Love that kind of work.

I've done some other Marvel headsculpts too. The Illyana Magik statue that was previewed in the Colossus photos, as well as the new headsculpts for Psylocke (which aren't up on Sideshow's website yet). I'd love to do one from the ground up...maybe I can convince my Art Directors to give me a chance. :)

Looks great Trev...
baseball size would be a nice size to work on I bet.
Really loving the stylized look as well....I'll bet it was fun, like you said.
Take care man!

Thanks, Randy! I like 1:4 scale quite a bit. If I had my choice, that would be the smallest I ever had to sculpt. :) But...it aint in the cards.
It was fun to do a stylized portrait. The Marvel stuff is all fun for that reason. Also a great honor to do portraits for something Tony sculpted...I'm a huge fan.

Yeah, it really was. I enjoy stylized projects a lot. It's nice not to hunt down hundreds of reference photos and allow myself to be a little more loose. :)
thanks!

That is amazing. Well, everything you do is. I'm just reall excited to see you do Marvel, and really amazed by your flexibility going from pure realism to a sort of comic style (not easy taking stylized 2D to 3D). I don't suppose we can expect any more Marvel anytime soon?

Thank you very much! It was fun to get to do something different.

I did get to do some other portraits for the Marvel line. There's an Illyana Magik statue previewed with Colossus that I did some portraits on. I also redid the portraits on a statue that was released over the summer of Psylocke. I still need to post shots of her headsculpt.
Thanks!

Hey Trevor!! Love your work.
I already have Colossus pre-ordered.
I absolutely love the stern and powerful look you gave Colossus.

I also ordered Psylocke and was wondering if you redid both heads on her?
Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Terrific! I gotta say, I'm really liking Colossus too! So grateful to have been part of it.

Psylocke's portraits were redone too. I sculpted two headsculpts for her, neither of which are shown on her order page. I suppose Sideshow will upload new photos whenever she comes back from production. (I believe there were shots of one of my heads when she was shown at San Diego Comic Con, though)

it's been fun working on Marvel stuff..I hope I get to do more! Thanks!

Anyways thanks again and keep up the good work.

I put up some shots of my altered versions in my journal here, as I feel the statue is Tony's work. I just did new faces. :)

Glad you like Legolas! It was such a great piece to be part of.

Best-
