Sherlock BBC by TrevorGrove Sherlock BBC by TrevorGrove
This was one of those fun opportunities where I was already sculpting the characters for myself, and then they were able to be turned into official figures.

Big Chief Studios contacted me about sculpting Baker Street's Finest, and I was just able to utilize my already in-progress headsculpts. Couldn't have worked have worked out better!

And for the record....Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were some of the quickest approvals I've ever had....incredibly nice of them to make it a painless process.

Look for these official 12" Sherlock figures from Big Chief later in the year.

There's something eerily Roman looking about this! I think it's the detail in the hair. Amazing work.

That's fantastic work Trev! Do you start a sculpt in clay, waste mold it and finish it in wax or do you start the sculpt in wax? Thanks

Thank you!

For small work especially I just begin in wax. Actually, even for larger work I do that. I find the whole clay/waste mold thing to be a pain. :D I'm just a lousy sculptor, though...the good guys do waste molds.

You can work however you feel comfortable, though....whatever gets you a result you like.

OMG YEAY! IM SO HAPPY NOW!

SO you make these out of hard wax..?
Does it just, not melt with the heat of your hands? CLay masses up all the time with me because it gets warm too fast

Thank you!

These are sculpted from hard wax. It's certainly a difficult process, but like anything, with patience and study, you can get better and better. Likeness work in particular is the most challenging, because we're all very critical judges of what's good and what's not. It's hard to please everyone with a likeness sculpture. :)

Question: do you sculpt the hair separately?

Thank you!

The hair on Sherlock's forehead was sculpted separately, but the rest is attached to the head. :)

Yeah, unfortunately the figures probably won't ship to customers until next year, if they are revealed for pre-order in the Summer. :(

Maybe a good gift for next year's birthday! :)
