Nathan Drake Mini Head by TrevorGrove Nathan Drake Mini Head by TrevorGrove
This was a piece I got to collaborate on with my friends at Sideshow. I was brought in to attempt a miniature portrait of Nathan Drake for a statuette that was released to coincide with the latest "Uncharted" game.

Way smaller than I like to work, but it was a cool little project to be part of.

sculpted in wax...not sure what scale, it was pretty tiny. :)

When I look at your sculpt I think wow that looks dead on and awesome. The final product is sadly missing something though

It's a pity that the final result turned out way more wide in the sides than your sculp.
Keep up with your awesomeness, maybe someday I'll have just enough money for that others Nathan Drake of yours :P

oh so YOU are one of those awesome people who spends a TON of time making an original mold for amazing little statuettes that just get painted not ever so nicely in a factory! well it would be nice if you found someone who could paint well, maybe you, so far i have seen only your amazing sculpts, but maybe a friend could help paint

scale aside, do you find it more difficult to sculpt realistic versions of digital characters like Drake and GTA guy? Do you get some leeway in your interpretations, or are the companies really strict with the likenesses.

Yeah, I definitely do find it tough. Drake's hair is not an easy thing to translate to sculpture...and the GTA character was so crude, since the game came out 10 years ago, so trying to capture the character, while still making it feel somewhat realistic, is tough.

the game makers were particular about the GTA guy, but this one not so much. Probably because it's so tiny.

Ironic that they would be more critical of the less realized character. have you ever used the casting material (i'm totally spacing on the name) that shrinks at a reliable rate. i believe McFarlane (used to?) uses it. it allows for larger original sculpts and smaller production pieces. you just remold the casting when it is at the desired size. the material is probably obsolete now between 3d scanners, zbrush, and 3d printers but i was always amazed by it.

I don't really have any tutorials or anything, I tend to be too lazy to document the process. You can search around online and find good sculpting tutorials though. There are lots of books out there as well. Hope you get to have some fun with it!

I know the feeling, I spend most of the year sewing and what little free time I have I try to get a little drawing done and catch up on books and tv. It's only over the Xmas break that I play games.
Uncharted is easily my favourite series of games, definitely worth getting.

thanks! For stuff like these I use a tiny needle tool mostly. With wax you can fine tune forms pretty easily.

I gotta get into larger stuff. I just ordered some water clay...I'm taking the leap! :) The small stuff is fun, but it's pretty taxing on the eyes.
