Ed Asner by TrevorGrove Ed Asner by TrevorGrove
This was a really fun and satisfying private commission I got to do this year. It's a 1/6 scale Ed Asner as he appeared in Lou Grant. Nobody has a mug like Ed Asner, and I really enjoyed trying to sculpt him.

Sculpted in hard wax, as usual.

thanks for looking!
Trev

My mom said I looked like Ed Asner when I was a baby (even though I'm a girl). That's why she called me "baby lou", and now "crazy lou" or some variant of "noun/adjective lou". I didn't know what she meant....and now I do. She was right. I did look like him when I was a baby...just...baby-ified...

Good job! :'D

He could hold his own with the classical busts of the Roman Caesars! Awesome work. You should get commissions to sculpt presidents, I say!

Very cool!! I like these portrait sculpts of people you wouldn't normally see as a 1:6 sculpt. I also like the look of smooth but not polished. Care to share your technique to pull that off or is that trade secret stuff?
1:6 in this case, is that around 1.5 inches high?
Thanks for sharing your work with us admirers.

Thanks! I'm with you, I too like the characters you wouldn't expect. They're usually more fun!

The finish is pretty simple to pull off. In my continuing pursuit of figuring out hot Hot Toys does their INCREDIBLE skin texture, I've been using sanding sponges to stipple the surface of my sculpts. You just sand the surface and polish it smooth, and then stipple with sanding sponges to get a texture started. then you can either brush it down with lighter fluid, or lightly sand the piece again. if you play around, you can achieve a decent skin texture...nothing like Hot Toys, but interesting nonetheless. :)

It is about 2" tall at 1/6 scale
best-
Trev

Thank-you for taking the time to reply and for the info! I have been a lurker at the clubhouse for many years (Shifletts,Villafane, Tony C, Tim Bruckner days)and its good to see you guys that have made it into the big game still pass on your knowledge. Good to see so many "wax" sculptors here on DA also. I was going to ask your wax preference but after reading your journals I see it is mainly TMS? I have samples of Azbro, Casteline (before chavant) and a few of Gary's waxes I like to mess with. Might have to try the Toxic Blend. You guys are a big inspiration for many of us,
Thanks again for sharing your wax pics with us!!!! Keep em coming.

wow, I'd buy a copy of that head. I love Ed Asner in Marry Tyler Moor Show. He does quite a few voice acting for cartoons to. Loved him in Boondocks as well. Great job. Your work is a real inspiration. How much does a commission like that run in you don't mind me asking?
